It is through the process of communication that people are made aware of the nature and objectives of the programs. The useful developmental messages are conveyed to the target groups through various communication approaches. This helps masses in acquiring new knowledge required for coping with fast changing society. It helps people in adoption of innovations for the improvement of their practices, methods and quality of life. Development as an objective is planned transformation of society from one stage of life and living to well-defined and known goal.
It is a process in which man is the objective as well as the tool of development. All objectives of transformation are to make man live as a human being, with better clothing, food, shelter, health and education. This cannot be achieved without man's involvement. He cannot be involved unless the whole process of development is communicated to him as a desirable and acceptable objective.
Communication, thus, becomes a key factor in the process of development. Thus, communication is very important in fostering the development process in a country. It can be a powerful instrument in integrating diversified society. Non-verbal communication can occur without use of words. In organizations, non-verbal communication is very important for interpersonal relations. Based on organizational practices, communication can further be divided into internal and external, formal and informal, downward and upward, horizontal and diagonal, and grapevine.
Flow of information within the organization is known as internal communication, which may be either formal or informal in nature.
External communication takes place between two organizations, that is, between the organizations and others outside the organizations. Formal communication is official communication, while informal communication takes place between members within the formal organization. Communication that flows from superiors to subordinates is downward communication, whereas communication that flows from subordinates to superiors is upward communication.
Diagonal communication cuts across the hierarchical barriers. However, this is formal in nature. For example, direct communication from a field sales person to the vice president HR is diagonal in nature. We may notice that they are not only functionally apart but also hierarchically different. In fact, it should be said that face-to-face meetings occur quite often in our Aviation Engine Repair center though they are not too often. In my opinion, it is extremely important since extremely frequent face-to-face meetings threaten to decrease the effectiveness of communication, since we will simply get used to this form of work and, if the message is not delivered effectively during the face-to-face meeting, its effectiveness will be low, while occasional but not rare face-to-face meeting help us keep our interests and attention to this type of communication quite high.
Naturally, this channel of communication is one of the most important since it provides an excellent opportunity for the direct and live communication between a sender and a receiver of the message. Practically, it means that the effectiveness of face-to-face communication is higher since the personal contact is stronger, not in the last turn, due to the use of both verbal and non-verbal communication. Such a combination naturally increases the effectiveness of communication in our organization.
Nonetheless, it is worthy of mention that in recent years some new channels of communication have been introduced in our Aviation Engine Repair Center. For instance, we amply use the Intranet within our organization as an effective medium that helps us be constantly in contact and, at the same time, the information shared within the company remains secured from any external breaches. However, it is worthy of mention that Internet is also widely sued for the promotion of our services as well as e-mail is often used as an effective channel of communication of our company and customers.
Thus, it is obvious that the effectiveness of communication highly depends on the channel used.
